Horse Racing Betting May Be Legal in NY

Horse Racing Betting May Be Legal in NY

In what could be a major victory for the horse racing industry, Gov. Andrew Cuomo is reportedly planning to sign a bill that would legalize betting on races in New York.

The proposed legislation, which was approved by the state Senate and Assembly last month, would allow bets to be placed at Saratoga Race Course and other upstate tracks, as well as on mobile apps and websites.

Cuomo has not yet said whether he will sign the bill, but his office has been meeting with representatives from the horse racing industry in recent weeks to discuss the proposal.

"We are actively engaged in discussions with the governor's office on implementation,"said Brad Grantski, a spokesman for Saratoga Casino and Raceway. "While we cannot comment on the specifics of any potential legislation, we are optimistic that something beneficial for both the racing industry and taxpayers alike will come out of these discussions."

The horse racing industry has been lobbying for years for legalized betting in New York, arguing that it could help generate hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue for the state. Under the proposed legislation, 10 percent of all bets would be earmarked for racing purses.

"This is an economic development issue," said Joe McMahon, president of Tioga Downs Casino Resort. "It is about creating jobs and generating new revenue for local communities."

Opponents of legalized betting argue that it could lead to increased gambling addiction and social problems. But supporters say it would provide a new form of entertainment for track-goers and could create thousands of jobs in the state's struggling horse racing industry.

NY Gambling Commission to Vote on Horse Racing Betting Legality

The New York State Gaming Commission will vote next week on whether to allow wagers on horse races, two industry sources confirmed to CBS News.

The vote, scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 6, was first reported by the Daily Racing Form. The commission is expected to approve the measure, the sources said.

If passed, it would allow race tracks and Off-Track Betting (OTB) facilities statewide to offer betting on live and simulcast horse races. It would also permit mobile and online wagering.

"This has been a long time in the making," one of the sources told CBS News. "We're optimistic that it will be a positive development for the industry."

The possibility of legalized betting on horse races in New York fueled a jump in stock prices for some of the largest publicly traded companies with interests in the sport Thursday morning. Shares of Churchill Downs Inc., operator of the famed Churchill Downs racetrack in Kentucky where the annual Kentucky Derby is held, were up almost 5 percent in early trading Thursday, while shares of Delaware North Companies - which recently acquired Finger Lakes Gaming & Racetrack - were up more than 2 percent.

Backers of legalized gambling say it could generate up to $200 million annually in new tax revenue for New York state and local governments. But opponents argue that it could lead to addiction and other social ills.

Horse Racing Could be Coming to a Casino Near You

If you're a fan of horse racing, you may be excited to learn that the activity could be coming to a casino near you. That's because many casinos are now including race tracks as part of their facilities.

This isn't really a new development; after all, the first modern casino, which opened in Las Vegas in 1931, had a race track. But the trend has been on the rise in recent years, with more and more casinos including tracks.

There are several reasons for this. First, horse racing is a popular spectator sport, and casinos are always looking for ways to bring in customers. Second, it's a good way to attract high-rollers; after all, who wouldn't want to get in some gambling action while watching horses race?

And finally, it's a way to offer something that other casinos don't. If you're looking for a place to bet on horses, your nearest casino is likely to be the one with the race track.

So if you're a fan of horse racing, or just enjoy betting on races, be sure to check out the casinos near you. You may be surprised at how many of them have tracks!

How to Play Horse Racing: The Basics

If you are looking to make some extra cash and have some fun, horse racing may be the perfect activity for you. With a little bit of knowledge about how to play horse racing, you can get in on the action and potentially make some money.

In horse racing, players bet on horses to finish first, second, or third in a given race. The odds are displayed for each horse, and players can place bets at any time before the start of the race. The bettors who guess the three horses that finish in first, second, and third place win the corresponding amount of money that they wagered on those horses (assuming that somebody else didn't guess those same three horses). If there is no clear favorite in a race, then the odds may be relatively even across all of the horses; this makes betting on horse racing a more risky proposition.

The key to success in horse racing is to do your research before making any bets. You'll want to look at things like the weight of each horse, their past performances, and what track they are running on. Keep in mind that horses perform differently on different tracks; for instance, horses tend to run faster on dirt tracks than they do on turf tracks. You can find all of this information and more by looking at websites like Horse Racing Nation or by reading newspapers like The Daily Racing Form.

Once you have a good idea about which horses are likely to do well in a particular race, it's time to start placing your bets. You can place bets at many different outlets including online betting sites, brick-and-mortar casinos, or state-run lotteries. Some of these places may offer better odds than others, so it's worth checking around before making any final decisions.

So now that you know how to play horse racing, why not give it a try? With a bit of research and some shrewd betting instincts, you could be cashing in on big wins in no time!
